Embrace the Bright Green!

Enjoy the Enjoyment has the story on the new Sounders FC jerseys. They look pretty sweet, I think. They almost make me think a bright-green Seahawks jersey wouldn't be a complete disaster.. :-]

If I wasn't already a Wii and Columbus Crew loyalist, I'd pick one of these up forthwith.

Matt Hasselbeck: Red Sox Fan

Yeah, I couldn't find a picture of Hass in Red Sox garb, but that was close enough. Y'all know he grew up in New England, and he's a well-renowned BoSox fan, just like DKSB himself. I've caught myself wondering if Hass ever catches the Red Sox when they come to Safeco (I'll be there for 2 of 3 when Boston comes back to Seattle this July, by the way)...

Would that offend any of you, if Hasselbeck was at an M's game rooting for the other team? I know that Clevelanders FREAKED when Lebron showed up at a playoff game rooting for the Yankees, so I understand if M's fans would react the same way... But I'd love to hang with the dude and get a "Let's Go Red Sox" chant going... :-]

By the way, big ups to the M's for taking 2 out of 3 from my Sawx... You're only 11 games behind us for the AL wild card!

DKSB's Jersey Buying Guide

Seahawk Addicts recently posted about jerseys, which is a matter close to my heart. I've always felt the only appropriate thing to wear on gameday is a Seahawks jersey, and I've also preferred a jersey as the best way to "represent" for the Hawks out here in the wilderness of the midwest.

First, my rules for jersey wearing:

1. No personalized jerseys... I'm not on the team, no matter how much I'd love to be.

2. Never tuck in your jersey... Kinda makes you look like a douche.

3. If a player is traded or leaves in free agency, etc... You can't wear the jersey until the player retires from the NFL.

4. At least for me, no #12 Fan jerseys... It's a nice idea, but it also seems like a cop-out, i.e. you don't want to take the risk of buying a current player's jersey.

Right now I own two Hasselbeck jerseys (a semi-authentic and a replica), a Big Walt jersey and a Largent semi-authentic throwback... I've got room for another jersey, and I might buy one this summer... But who? I have rules for that too.

1. Pick someone who just signed a nice, LOOOOONG contract. Avoid players with 2 years or less on their deals... I got burned buying a Josh Brown jersey last year, for example.

2. Try to be unique, but not just for its own sake. If Hasselbeck is your favorite player (he is mine), it doesn't make you a bandwagoner to get his jersey. My #8 home semi-authentic is what I wear on most game days. However, I think it's really cool whenever I see someone wearing a lineman's jersey (offensive or defensive). You'd have to pry my Walter Jones jersey from my cold dead hands.

If I get to buy a jersey this year, I'll probably get a Marcus Trufant replica... He's A) Awesome B) Just signed a long-term deal, and C) Is a Tacoma/Wazzu northwest homeboy.

How about y'all? What are your jersey rules? What jerseys do you have? What are you gonna buy this summer?

See y'all at XLVI!

I'm a mere 207 miles from Indianapolis, which just got awarded the rights to host Super Bowl XLVI on February 5, 2012. Thus I vow to be in attendance, assuming the Mayan apocalypse doesn't happen 10 months early or anything... I wouldn't have to pay for airfare or a hotel room, so it's just too good to pass up. It would be perfect if the Seahawks were involved, but I'd want to go even if it was Rams v. Steelers (yuk).

Of course, I'll be at Lucas Oil Stadium at some point in the 2009 regular season to see the Hawks play the Colts as well. I went to the Seattle/Indy preseason game in 2006:

(more pics here) Here was the highlight of the evening...

We wandered over to the area near the NBC broadcast stage, and Jerome Bettis was signing autographs less than 10 feet away. He started moving towards the stairs to go back into make-up, and suddenly it was the moment of truth. Would I say something about the injustice of XL, or would I just sit there brownthumbed & slack-jawed?

I decided to speak truth to power…

“MR. BETTIS! YOU KNOW THE REFS GAVE YOU THAT RING! YOU KNOW THE REFS GAVE YOU THAT RING!”

He did not acknowledge my insolence, but more than one of the Seahawks fans around me whooped and exclaimed “damn!”

Who is Seattle's greatest pro athlete?

Ugh... The downtime drags on, doesn't it? But I'll pose a question to y'all today... Who is the greatest athlete in the history of Seattle pro sports? My nominees:

-Steve Largent

Ummm... Duh.

-Ken Griffey Jr.

I was around for Junior's Seattle glory days, and I can honestly say I've never seen a more exciting player than him (and I'm a Red sox fan.. It would be really easy for me to cite Pedro, Manny or Papi here). Even I like the idea of him ending his career with the Mariners... Depite the way he left town and the rash of injuries he's suffered since then, he's clearly the top player in Mariners history.

-Gary Payton

Once again, I was around for the peak of The Glove's career... We even had a running joke back at Western about him getting hired to increase tourism to Tulalip... The slogan GP would deliver at the end of the TV ad?

(now close your eyes and think about how GP would say this)

"Tulalip, Muthafuckas!"

I still say that every time I drive past Tulalip... anyway, here's some youtube evidence for GP's greatness...

Tatupu Arrested for DUI

The story is still developing, but the details were first posted on Seahawk Addicts...

My initial take is that if this is true, Tatupu MUST face some kind of punishment from the team, the league, and the legal system. Without all the details, I'm not going to say "CUT HIM" or "LOCK HIM UP FOR A DECADE," but this IS serious business, and the organization and its fans would be hypocrites to give #51 a blanket free pass here.

How about you hire a driver, Lofa? Cripes. Let's hope he's learned his lesson, takes the consequences like the leader he is supposed to be, and stops this turdish behavior before someone gets hurt or killed.

UPDATE: Lofa's statement

"I want to apologize to my family, teammates, the Seahawks ownership and organization, and the fans for making a poor decision and putting myself in a bad situation. I take seriously my role as a leader on this team, and in the community, and because of that I'm disappointed and embarrassed by the level of poor judgment I used last weekend. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. This will never happen again, and I hope through hard work on and off the field to begin earning your respect and trust again."

Well said... Now he has to live up to it.

HASSELBECK will put your ass in the wall

It's that dead time of year for us NFL fans, but that doesn't mean I can't be a total dork and race as HASSELBECK on Mario Kart Wii online... I've been up until 3 am the last few nights playing Mario Kart... It's not like I'm a college professor with finals to grade or anything, right? :-]

While it sucks not being able to play GTA IV (We only have a Wii), MKW is pretty effing sweet.

Speaking of sweet, I just got off my ass and ordered something that I miss from my days living in the pacific northwest: Tim's Cascade Style chips.. Here's how much I love these chips.. I once barfed a whole bag of sea salt & vinegar chips all over my girlfriend on a carnival ride (looooong story)... I was back eating those mofos in about a week :-]

For those of you who are northwest expatriates, what do you miss that you could only get in the PNW?

Bitter Sweet Symphony: So Good or No Good?

Yup, that's our unofficial theme song. Not exactly Highway to Hell, is it? Plus, it features the following lyrics which scream "ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL???!!!"

It's a bittersweet symphony, that's life
Trying to make ends meet
You're a slave to money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah

Woo! Go Hawks! To be fair, this is a pretty cool video featuring the song from a few years back...

In a weird way, the fact that people have attacked the song as a lame choice for an NFL team's theme song has made me embrace it a bit. Still, I think we can do better. Number one, the Seahawks theme should have SOME connection to the pacific northwest, it should kick some goddamn ass, and it shouldn't be played the fuck out already.

Here's some ideas (I'm limiting myself to one song per artist)

-Scentless Apprentice by Nirvana

-Let Me Drown by Soundgarden

-Man in the Box by Alice in Chains

-Go by Pearl Jam

-Entertain by Sleater-Kinney

What do y'all think?

DKSB Training Camp Shindig?

The Hawks have not yet released detailed information on the dates for training camp, but I plan to be there reporting for DKSB on July 29th (assuming camp is open by then).

You'll know me when you see me... the bearded hobo-lookin' dude in a Hasselbeck jersey and a Red Sox hat. :-] Maybe we can set up some sort of joint event with Seahawk Addicts? MS, I'm looking in your direction....

Statistical Nerdage: Comparing the Divisions Since Realignment

Instead of grading, I spent a good part of this morning crunching numbers from Pro Football Reference regarding the strength of the 8 NFL divisions since realignment in 2002. And yes, the NFC West is the worst division in football since realignment.

Divisional Regular Season Winning Percentage Since 2002
1. AFC South .536
2. NFC East .531
3. AFC East .518
4. AFC West .516
5. AFC North .500
6. NFC South .490
7. NFC North .466
8. NFC West .443

Yeah, our division sucks, and it isn't really even close. However, Which teams have been the "most dominant" in their given divisions since 2002? Here, I took the difference between the winning % of each division's top team (2002-2007) and the winning % of the other three teams combined:

"Most Dominant" teams in relation to division foes (2002-2007)

1. Patriots .351
2. Colts .299
3. Seahawks .216
4. Packers .171
5. Steelers .167
6. Eagles .138
7. SD/Den .118
8. Panthers .055

So who is the most impressive here? Probably the Colts, who have dominated a division with two other teams over .500 from 02-07 (Jaguars and Titans). Some other interesting nuggets:

Top 10 teams (2002-2007)

1. Patriots 75-21
2. Colts 73-23
3. Eagles 61-35
4. Steelers 60-36
5. Seahawks 58-38
5. Chargers 58-38
5. Broncos 58-38
8. Packers 57-39
9. Cowboys 52-44
9. Chiefs 52-44

Worst 5 teams

32. Lions 29-67
31. Raiders 30-66
30. Texans 32-64
29. Cardinals 33-63
28. 49ers 35-61

Wow. 2 of the 5 worst teams in our division... That move from the AFC looks pretty good now, huh? :-]
